Proposed New Pool Laws

With proposed amendments to swimming pool legislation being considered by State Government, homeowners may soon be required to ensure that their pool fence meets safety standards before selling or leasing their property.
In 2008, The Australian Water Safety Council developed a strategy with the aim of reducing drowning deaths by 50% by 2020. Reforming the current legislation would significantly increase the chances of the Council achieving their aim.
The Royal Life Saving's chief executive Rob Bradley said that despite the number of drowning deaths of children under five falling by about 15 per cent last year compared with the five-year ...
Interest Rate Reduction

The Reserve Bank has cut interest rates by 0.25 per cent.
The 25 basis point fall is the first cut in 2 1/2 years and has been widely anticipated since the release of lower-than-expected inflation figures last week.
The reduction is great news for people paying off a mortgage.
The official interest rate is now 4.5 per cent, and each 0.25 per cent drop in interest rates slices about $60 off the monthly interest cost of an average Australian mortgage.
The RBA's announcement came on the day new figures from the Bureau of Statistics showed Sydney's median price for established houses dropped the least ...

Sydney Property Report

Despite continued economic uncertainty, particularly on international markets, the news continued to be positive for the Sydney housing market this week.
As expected, Sydney has led the nation for most of the year as the most resilient and stable capital city for house prices. This performance is continuing, according to the latest Australian Property Monitors data, with Sydney median house prices down just 0.6 per cent during the year to August. Apartments performed even better, with prices unchanged despite a relatively quiet period of activity.
Expect this nation-leading performance by Sydney's housing market to continue. ...
Market Snapshot

Global economic instability and local interest rate movement uncertainties have led to a general lack of confidence in the property market of late. A quick analysis of current auction clearance rates, however, indicates that the local market is far from doom and gloom. It is apparent that due to the low supply of quality stock in the market, clearance rates in many areas of Sydney remain healthy.
Despite a general easing of prices, properties continue to trade and in some cases with outstanding results. History has proven property to be a strong long-term performer, and the desire for home ownership has certainly not dwindled. A quality ...
Reserve Bank Interest Rate Announcement

As reported in domain.com.au, the Reserve Bank has kept interests rates on hold at 4.75 per cent for another month.
Although the decision was widely expected, there has been plenty of speculation recently about both a rate rise, and a rate cut, leaving consumers confused about which way rates were headed this month.
"It's a good news day for households with a mortgage," says Domain.com.au expert Carolyn Boyd. "Although retail sales figures had a bit of a jump last week there are plenty of factors to keep the Reserve Bank on the sidelines, including a slow housing market and continued global uncertainty."
While there has been talk of a rate cut, ...

INNER WEST COURIER - AUGUST 25th 2011
Following the unprecedented second meeting of the Joint regional Panel on July 14 where the panel extended yet another opportunity for the NSW Police to respond to a number of important issues raised by the Leichhardt community and Council, the Police have again failed to comply with the conditions of approval as detailed by the panel.
The panel extended a further period of time to the Police to respond to the issues of parking and heritage and this information was to have been presented to the panel by August 12. In a letter dated Thursday August 11, 2011, the applicant has requested yet a further extension of one month to September 12 in ...
Renovating A Period Home For Sale

Period houses that have been renovated unsympathetically tend to fetch considerably less than houses that have original features in tact. Replacing original timber framed windows with aluminium sliding windows, for example, significantly decreases buyer appeal. Ironically, those who spend money “improving” their house with poorly chosen materials end up with a lower value property than the neighbour who doesn't spend a cent.
National Trust Conservation Director Jacqui Goddard says most renovators “stuff up” their houses with the best of intentions. “Really, the best way to ruin a house is to try to make it fit the fashion,” she says. “People ...
